Famed for it's sea-front with it's piers and pebbled beach, the south coast resort of Brighton is one of Britain's most vibrant cities.
With one of the country's longest established gay communities and a host of fashionable clubs and bars, the city is known for it's pulsating nightlife, which provides a counterpoint to the more peaceful retirement town of Hove next door.
The area has been settled since prehistory, but the first written references to Brighton appear during the Roman occupation of Britain, indeed Roman villas existed there and elsewhere along the south coast.
Burnt to the ground in the 16th century by the French, Brighton only blossomed from it's fishing village roots to tourist haven in the 18th century when the idea of seaside holidays was born and the town was inundated by rich holiday-makers. These days you needn't be wealthy to sample Brighton's delights.
